The New Space Economy Expoforum: the event to discuss the challenges of the new space economy.
IT – Dal 16 al 18 dicembre 2023, abbiamo partecipato al New Space Economy European Expoforum a Roma, un evento dedicato alla nuova economia spaziale che ha visto la partecipazione di esperti, istituzioni e aziende leader del settore. È stata un’opportunità unica per confrontarci su temi come le innovazioni tecnologiche, la sostenibilità e le prospettive future nello spazio. Durante il forum, abbiamo avuto l’occasione di esplorare le ultime tendenze, partecipare a workshop e confrontarci con realtà emergenti che stanno plasmando il futuro del settore spaziale. Un’esperienza fondamentale per il nostro Team, che ci ha permesso di accrescere competenze e connetterci con nuove opportunità nel mondo dello spazio.
EN – From December 16th to 18th, 2023, we attended the New Space Economy European Expoforum in Rome, an event focused on the new space economy, featuring experts, institutions, and leading companies in the sector. It was a unique opportunity to discuss topics such as technological innovations, sustainability, and future prospects in space. During the forum, we had the chance to explore the latest trends, participate in workshops, and engage with emerging players shaping the future of the space industry. A key experience for our Team, allowing us to enhance our skills and connect with new opportunities in the space field.
Training week for the Fly Your Satellite (FYS) project at the European Space Agency
IT – Dal 17 al 21 marzo abbiamo preso parte alla Training Week del progetto Fly Your Satellite (FYS) presso l’ESTEC dell’@europeanspaceagency, il centro tecnico principale dell’ESA nei Paesi Bassi. Durante questa settimana intensiva di formazione, abbiamo approfondito aspetti cruciali della progettazione, integrazione e verifica di un satellite, affiancati da esperti del settore e insieme agli altri team universitari europei selezionati. Abbiamo partecipato a sessioni pratiche, workshop tecnici e momenti di confronto che ci hanno permesso di crescere sia dal punto di vista tecnico che organizzativo. Ringraziamo ESA Education per questa straordinaria opportunità, che rappresenta un momento fondamentale per lo sviluppo del nostro progetto spaziale e per la crescita del nostro Team.
EN – From March 17th to 21st, we took part in the Fly Your Satellite (FYS) Training Week at @europeanspaceagency’s ESTEC, ESA’s main technical center in the Netherlands. During this intensive training week, we explored key aspects of satellite design, integration, and verification, guided by industry experts and joined by other selected university teams from across Europe. We engaged in hands-on sessions, technical workshops, and knowledge-sharing moments that enriched us both technically and organizationally. A huge thanks to ESA Education for this incredible opportunity, which marks a pivotal step in the development of our space project and the growth of our Team.
Maker Faire 2025 - Rome: 3 days of Europe's biggest innovation event and we were there!
IT – Dal 10 al 12 ottobre abbiamo partecipato alla Maker Faire Rome 2025, il più grande evento europeo dedicato all’innovazione, alla tecnologia e alla creatività. È stata un’occasione speciale per presentare i nostri progetti a un pubblico vasto e curioso, fatto di studenti, professionisti e appassionati. Abbiamo avuto modo di raccontare il nostro lavoro, condividere idee, e scoprire progetti incredibili da tutta Europa. Ringraziamo @makerfairerome per averci accolti in questa grande festa dell’ingegno. Tre giorni intensi, tra entusiasmo, domande e nuove connessioni.
EN – From October 10th to 12th we took part in Maker Faire Rome 2025, Europe’s biggest event for innovation, technology, and creativity. It was a special opportunity to showcase our projects to a wide and curious audience of students, professionals, and enthusiasts. We had the chance to share our work, exchange ideas, and discover amazing projects from across Europe. Many thanks to @makerfairerome for welcoming us to this great celebration of innovation. Three intense days filled with excitement, questions, and new connections.
The International Astronautical Congress is the main international event in the space sector.
IT – Dal 13 al 17 ottobre 2025 abbiamo preso parte all’International Astronautical Congress (IAC), che quest’anno si è tenuto a Milano, nel cuore dell’Italia. Un’occasione straordinaria per entrare in contatto con studenti, ricercatori e professionisti del settore spaziale provenienti da tutto il mondo, presentare i nostri progetti e confrontarci con una comunità internazionale in continua evoluzione. Tra conferenze, workshop e momenti di networking, abbiamo vissuto giornate intense e ricche di stimoli. Ringraziamo l’ @iafastro per aver reso possibile un evento di questa portata proprio nel nostro Paese. Un’esperienza che ha lasciato il segno nel percorso del nostro Team.
EN – From October 13th to 17th, 2025, we took part in the International Astronautical Congress (IAC), which this year was held in Milan, in the heart of Italy. It was an extraordinary opportunity to connect with students, researchers, and professionals from across the global space sector, showcase our projects, and engage with an ever-evolving international community. Between conferences, workshops, and networking moments, we experienced intense and inspiring days. We thank @iafastro for making such a remarkable event possible right here in our country. It was a truly meaningful experience in our Team’s journey.

IT – Il 20 settembre, noi e gli altri Team del Sapienza Aerospace Student Association abbiamo tenuto il SASA Aerospace Forum, un forum che in vista del nuovo Anno Accademico ci ha permesso di presentare i nostri nuovi progetti e i traguardi raggiunti fino ad ora, il tutto incorniciato dall’Auditorium Luigi Broglio dell’ @agenziaspazialeitaliana , che ringraziamo per questa opportunità. È stata un’esperienza emozionante per i membri del Team che sono saliti sul palco, ma anche per coloro che li hanno sostenuti dagli spalti. Il palco ha accolto inoltre ospiti illustri come l’Ing.Dante Galli dell’ @europeanspaceagency , il Prof. Franco Mastroddi della @sapienzaroma , la Dott.ssa Immacolata Donnarumma dell’ @agenziaspazialeitaliana , il Dott. Cristiano Franchino di @thalesaleniaspace .
EN – On September 20th, we and the other Teams of the Sapienza Aerospace Student Association held the SASA Aerospace Forum, a forum that in view of the new Academic Year allowed us to present our new projects and the goals achieved so far, all framed by the Luigi Broglio Auditorium of the @agenziaspazialeitaliana , which we thank for this opportunity. It was an exciting experience for the Team members who went up on stage, but also for those who supported them from the stands. The stage also welcomed illustrious guests such as Eng. Dante Galli of the @europeanspaceagency , Prof. Franco Mastroddi of the @sapienzaroma , Dr. Immacolata Donnarumma of the @agenziaspazialeitaliana , Dr. Cristiano Franchino of @thalesaleniaspace .
Lucy: sounding rocket with active control system. Low-cost and reusable.
IT – Questo progetto rappresenta il nostro primo approccio al controllo attivo, un ambito completamente nuovo per il team. Il Razzo Sonda, lungo circa 80 cm, è stato progettato e costruito in soli 40 giorni, seguendo una filosofia low-cost e orientata alla riutilizzabilità. È pensato per testare sensori, algoritmi e filtri da applicare nei futuri progetti. Il razzo monta tre set di pinne con funzioni distinte: le inferiori garantiscono la stabilità, le centrali (vicino al centro di massa) controllano la rotazione sull’asse Z, mentre le superiori correggono attivamente la traiettoria. L’elettronica di bordo comprende un Raspberry Pi Pico, una IMU a 9 assi e un sensore di pressione. L’obiettivo è acquisire esperienza nei sistemi di controllo e sviluppare competenze nei GNC (Guidance, Navigation & Control). La missione mira a validare modelli matematici, valutare i sistemi di bordo, quantificare i disturbi e testare il controllo della rotazione. Il lancio è stato ripreso sia da terra che con camera di bordo.
EN – This project marks our first experience with active control, a completely new field for the team. The 32-inch-long Sounding Rocket was designed and built in just 40 days, following a low-cost and reusable approach. It was developed to test sensors, algorithms, and filters for future applications. The rocket features three sets of fins with distinct roles: the lower fins ensure stability, the central ones (near the center of mass) control rotation along the Z-axis, and the upper fins actively correct the trajectory. Onboard electronics include a Raspberry Pi Pico, a 9-axis IMU, and a pressure sensor. The goal is to gain experience with control systems and develop GNC (Guidance, Navigation & Control) skills. The mission aims to validate mathematical models, evaluate onboard systems, quantify flight disturbances, and test initial rotation control. The launch was filmed from the ground and with an onboard camera.

IT – Mercoledì 8 Maggio si è tenuta presso il campo di volo “Volere e Volare” di Nettuno l’annuale giornata aerospaziale “Sapienza in Volo” della Sapienza Università di Roma, un’importante occasione di confronto ed incontro dedicata agli studenti, organizzata da SASA e il consiglio d’area didattica di ingegneria aerospaziale. Un particolare ringraziamento all’Ing. Andrea Minchella del programma IRIDE, l’Ing. Ornella Bombaci di @thalesaleniaspace, l’Ing. Jacopo Ricci, l’Ing. Carlo Nicoletti di @auryn_aero e l’Ing. The Sapienza Space Team meets ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti
ITA – Il Sapienza Space Team, in occasione della cerimonia di inaugurazione dell’anno accademico 2023-2024 della Sapienza Università di Roma (721° dalla fondazione dello Studium Urbis) ha avuto l’onore di presentare all’astronauta ESA Samantha Cristoforetti, il prototipo di sonda atmosferica con cui ha preso parte alla CanSat Competition 2023 in Virginia.
È stata un’importante occasione di scambio e confronto con una delle più importanti figure dell’esplorazione spaziale italiana e internazionale.
Ringraziamo nuovamente la Magnifica Rettrice Antonella Polimeni per l’invito e l’astronauta ESA Samantha Cristoforetti per la sua disponibilità e il suo entusiasmo.
ENG – The Sapienza Space Team, on the occasion of the inauguration ceremony of the 2023-2024 academic year of the Sapienza University of Rome (721st since the foundation of the Studium Urbis) had the honor of presenting the probe prototype to ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti atmospheric system with which he took part in the 2023 CanSat Competition in Virginia.
It was an important opportunity for exchange and discussion with one of the most important figures in Italian and international space exploration.
We thank again the Magnificent Rector Antonella Polimeni for the invitation and the ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti for her availability and enthusiasm.
